Commitment vs. Compliance

With over two decades of hands-on experience in the construction and utility sectors, Darren P. Muljo is a Certified Health & Safety Technician (CHST) and a respected leader in workplace safety and leadership training. As founder of Darren P Muljo CHST – Safety Training & Consultation L.L.C., he has dedicated his career to helping crews, companies, and contractors "make safety personal."
Darren’s passion for safety stems from a deeply personal place. At just five years old, he lost his grandfather, Ransom Cundy, in the tragic sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. That loss, combined with years of firsthand jobsite experience, fuels his unwavering commitment to ensuring every worker makes it home safely at the end of the day.
Darren’s services include OSHA/MSHA/FMCSA compliance audits, customized jobsite training, leadership coaching, and engaging tailgate talks designed to connect safety protocols with real-life decisions. His approach isn’t about checking boxes—it’s about building a safety culture from the inside out.
Whether he’s speaking to a room of industry leaders or walking a muddy trench with a crew, Darren brings empathy, credibility, and results. His upcoming book, Making Safety Personal, further expands on his mission to elevate safety leadership at every level.
I believe safety isn’t just a policy—it’s personal. Through real stories, practical tools, and honest conversations, I help teams take ownership and make safety a way of life, not just a checklist.
I don’t just teach safety—I help companies live it. My approach focuses on building trust, driving accountability, and connecting safety to what matters most: people. By working directly with leadership and crews, I’ve helped clients lower their EMR and OSHA recordables, reduce insurance premiums, and—most importantly—create lasting buy-in and a culture where safety isn’t enforced, it’s embraced.
Because at the end of the day, tomorrow is your reward for working safely today.
Over the past 20 years, I’ve been honored to serve in key safety and leadership roles for some of the most respected names in construction and utilities—including Musson Brothers, Skanska USA Building, MA Mortenson, KS Energy Services, and Y-COM/Young’s Communication.
My boots-on-the-ground experience spans a wide range of projects: from roadway and underground utility infrastructure across the nation, to expansive solar fields powering the future, to an 8-story hospital where precision and people’s lives were on the line. These diverse projects sharpened my perspective and deepened my commitment to making safety real—not just regulated.
At every stop, I brought the same mindset: safety isn’t a department, it’s a daily decision. That belief now drives everything I do through Darren P Muljo CHST – Safety Training & Consultation L.L.C.
